ABOUT OPORTO

Oporto is a city with 41.66 km ² and a population of 237 584 inhabitants. Known as Oporto city since the mid nineteenth century and considered by many the Northern Capital, it gave the name (Portus Cale) to the Portucalense County in the early middle ages and to Portugal.

Located along the Douro River estuary, Porto is one of the oldest historical centers of Europe, having been classified as World Heritage by UNESCO in 1996, and is associated with one of the most famous wines in the world, the Port Wine. Although this wine is produced with grapes from the Douro region, located upstream, and stored on the opposite bank of Oporto, in Vila Nova de Gaia, the name of the drink became irrevocably associated with the city name from where it was exported to all over the world for over three centuries. The cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia, belong to more than fifty producers of Port wine companies, and are the home to the largest concentration of alcohol in the world per square meter.

The city of Oporto was built over a series of hills of flattened tops which show an extensive platform of erosion extending to the north and gently descending towards the Atlantic Ocean. The valley of the Douro river abruptly cuts the natural extension of the platform to south, giving rise to a series of towering granite cliffs. This scenario has been the inspiration of artists and writers.
